Odd Society is dedicated to combining Old World distilling traditions with New World ingredients and ingenuity to create a family of spirits including whiskey, vodka and gin.
Founder and Distiller Gordon Glanz holds an MSc in brewing and distilling from Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland where he experimented with distilling whiskey using raw grains and commercial enzymes before studying under the masters at Springbank distillery in Campbeltown.
Wishing to celebrate and pay homage to their ancestral roots, their spirits are fermented and distilled onsite following exacting recipes. They complete every step of the process right on Granville Island – from organic grain to glass! Spirit production is an art form that requires time honored experience, knowledge & care. All their spirits are crafted by hand from only the finest organic BC grown grains and raw materials. Each batch is perfected by meticulously controlling every step – from the on-site fermentation of our selected organic grains to the triple distillation process in our handmade copper stills.
At Mad Lab they pride themselves on being as hands on as possible during the whole process. From equipment design, production technique, to packaging and quality control, they are aware of how everything is progressing from grain to glass.
Brewing with 100% BC grown malted barley, the mash is fermented with a continuous yeast culture, similar to using a sourdough technique from baking. Allowing for consistent and unique flavors, with a large, healthy culture that they are happy to call their own.
DISTILLATION
Based on a decade of experience, the still that was decided on was a direct-fire pot still with a thumper. An unusual design to find in a commercial distillery, but allows for maximum flavor control while still allowing for the necessary chemical purity required for a premium craft spirit. The direct flame on the boiler produces a rich, toasty flavor that enhances the overall taste and smoothness of our finished product.
