Today you will visit the Ancient City of Pergamon which used to be the Eastern Capital for the rulers from Rome.
It was an important city of its time and well placed on the hills overlooking the lands below and the Caicus River.
The city was the capital of Asian Roman lands until Ephesus was built and the title handed over. The ruins of Pergamon are today still quite impressive.
You will get to visit the Acropolis, which was actually modeled on the one in Athens. The view from this vantage point shows you how strategic their location was.
You will also visit the Athenaeum Library which was offered to Cleopatra as a wedding present and used to house over 200,000 scrolls.
You will visit all the other major attractions of the ruins before heading off to visit the Sanctuary of Ascelepion. It is set down in the valley from the Acropolis and where many used to come to cure their ailments as they believed the water had healing powers.
