The Pilanesberg Game Reserve is located just over 200km from Johannesburg and can be reached in ~2hours, making it ideal for day trips out of Johannesburg albeit with early morning starts.
A typical day tour will include pick or meeting at entrance gate followed by morning drive in the park along both scenic as well as productive routes inside the park.
The game reserve is unique in many ways. The park lies within the Pilanesberg Alkaline Ring Complex, a series of concentric hills that are the remnants of a long-extinct volcano. The park is home to the South African big five as well as both arid savanna species such as springbok and red hartebeest as well as buffalo, white rhino and waterbuck of the wetter savanna. Similarly, bird species found in both types of savanna can be found in the park, with over 300 species to be found in the park.
