Göreme Open-Air Museum
Göreme Open-Air Museum is one of Cappadocia’s most significant historical and religious sites, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This rock-carved monastic complex dates back to the 10th–13th centuries, when Christian monks established churches and chapels within the soft volcanic rock formations.
As we explore the site, we discover well-preserved frescoes depicting biblical scenes, including the life of Jesus and early Christian saints. Among the most remarkable churches are the Apple Church (Elmalı Kilise), with its elegant domed structure, and the Snake Church (Yılanlı Kilise), known for its striking fresco of St. George slaying a dragon.
The museum provides a fascinating insight into monastic life, where monks lived in seclusion, praying and teaching Christianity. Walking through this sacred site, we immerse ourselves in Cappadocia’s rich spiritual and artistic heritage before continuing our journey through the region.
