Detailed itinerary

1

The tour starts at your accommodation from where you will go to the ferry terminal of Horta for the passage to Pico. On Pico there are drives of 15 to 30 minutes in-between the attractions. At the end of the tour you will take again the ferry back to Horta and will be dropped off at your accommodation.

2

Ferry transfer from Horta in Faial to Madalena do Pico. Ferries are operating all year round and a vital connection between the Islands of the Triangle.

3

The vineyards of Criação Velha around Madalena are home to volcanic wines which have seen a resurrection over the last decade. The vineyards have been classified in 2004 as UNESCO World Heritage Site, the wine is grown directly in the volcanic rocks in small plots which are protected from the wind by little rock walls.

4

The small Porto do Calhau is one of the many small ports around the island. It offers a nice view over to Faial and on windy days the waves are crushing spectacularly on the volcanic rocks.

5

The lighthouse Farol de São Mateus offers a spectacular view of the south coast of Pico. If you are lucky, you might even spot a whale or dolphins.

6

Lajes do Pico used to be the center of the whaling activity on the south coast, today it is one of the major points for starting a whale watching tour. The small town invites for a stroll.

7

The Lagoa do Capitão is one of many small lakes from where you can admire the majesty of Pico mountain. The lakes are home to a rich birdlife, surrounded by green pastures.

8

The small forest park in Prainha is a perfect place to stop for a picnic with a view on neighbouring São Jorge Island. For kids there is even a small playground.

9

São Roque do Pico on the north coast is the second whaling station on Pico. The slopes around São Roque have a completely different character, with all the cows you feel like being in the Alps.

10

Cais do Mourato on the north coast of Pico is marked by the Adegas, small rock houses, of the winemakers of Pico. There are several natural swimming pools in-between the lava rocks.

11

Madalena surrounded by the UNESCO World Heritage vineyards is a charming coastal town. From Madalena you get one of the best views on Faial.
