One of the twelve apostles, St John lived his final years in Ephesus. Once he was exiled to the Greek island Patmos where he wrote his Gospel and then turned back to Ephesus. This church was built 6th century AD, by Roman emperor Justinia and the tomb of St John is believed to lie under the main dome.
