Denmark ruled St. Thomas almost continuously from 1666 until 1917. In rebellion against the Dane’s oppressive control, Mary Thomas, Axeline Salomon and Mathilda McBean led an uprising in 1878 that was later called Fireburn because of all the houses and plantations that were torched. These women were considered heroines and given the name the Three Queens. Their statues, which were created by Richard Hallier in 2005, are located in a four-acre, terraced garden in the Kongens Quarter.

Stop 3

Blackbeard's Castle is one of five National Historic Landmarks in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is located in the town of Charlotte Amalie, on the island of St. Thomas. Blackbeard's Castle, built in 1679 by the Danes as a watchtower to protect the harbor and Fort Christian, was originally called Skitsborg.

4

Government House is a neoclassical, gracious-story white building with beautifully intricate ironwork along the balconies. Built between 1865 and 1867, it is a perfect example of the grandeur of official buildings during Danish colonial times. You can admire it from the outside and visit the lobby which contains: display boards of the islands’ governors including Danish, Naval, and Civilian; two small paintings by renowned Impressionist artist, Camille Pissarro; and three murals by Italian-American artist Peppino Margravite.

5
Stop 5

Fort Christian is a fort in the town of Charlotte Amalie on the island of St. Thomas, in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It was built between 1672 and 1680 by Danish settlers at the beginning of the first successful colonial exploration of the island. The fort became a key point of defense, housing local administration throughout the period of Danish rule, which ended in 1917 with the sale of the territories to the United States.

6

Emancipation Garden) is a park on the island of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. The park was built to commemorate the emancipation of slaves, which occurred on July 3, 1848. It features a commemorative plaque, a bronze bust of a freed slave trumpeting a shell, and a replica of the Liberty Bell.

7

Cardow Jewelers flagship store in Charlotte Amalie has over 6,000 square feet of jewelry, watches, diamonds, and gold. Most of their collections are one of a kind. Visit them to see their world-famous collection of sapphires, diamonds, rubies, and emeralds.

8

Commonly called Market Square, it has served as a produce market and community meeting venue for nearly two centuries. When the square was established is uncertain but it appears on maps as early as 1836. The cast iron bungalow is dated around 1904. Market women played an important role in the square, selling fruits and goods. The bungalow was controlled by these colorful and spirited ladies.
