Walking is a perfect formula to whet your appetite. And walking through a mountain like Jaizkibel airs your brain, brightens your eyes and reveals to you stories of fishermen, pirate shepherd and aviators. After the walk, Hondarribia and the best private club of its kind await you: one in which eating well, and drinking better, are revered.

We will kick things off in the fishing port of Hondarribia where you will learn about the significant role of the ocean in the life of Basques and understand our strong connection to it. Did you know that we don’t use nets to catch ‘bonito’ - white tuna? We fish them one by one using traditional methods!
From the port we will follow the way up to a lighthouse constructed in 1881 and continue along the coast passing spectacular coves, rugged cliffs and artistically shaped sandstone rock formations. We will hike for about 3 hours.
Hope you are hungry because it’s high time to head to members only Basque gastronomic society! ‘Txokos’ - as we call them in Euskara are not just places to cook and eat but most of all they play an enormously important part in our social life.
We will be welcomed by our friend and an excellent chef - Fernando who, apparently, fell into a clay pot with Basque fish stew ‘marmitako’ as a child and since then can’t live without cooking….and eating! Fernando will prepare for us an authentic Basque lunch using the highest quality products from the local garden and fishing port which we visited earlier today. Your plates will sequentially fill up with mouth-watering anchovies, Basque tomato salad with home-marinated tuna fish, baked monkfish and ‘pantxineta’ - vanilla custard, puff pastry and roast almond dessert!
After the meal you’ll discover the historic part of Hondarribia. Its narrow streets, flowers draped from the balconies and medieval charm creates an extraordinary atmosphere and cultural context. You will find out who were ‘hacheros’ - men with peculiar sheep wool hats and discover a hidden collection of tapestries by Rubens in the castle of Emperor Charles V.
At the end of the day your private transport will take you back to the hotel. We will drive a scenic Jaizkibel road. The 457m high mount is considered one of the major areas of biodiversity in the Cantabrian Coast. Watch out - you are about to enjoy some incredible views!
