The historic town of Gernika is very important for the Basque people. Once part of the Kingdom of Navarre, each Basque territory had its own autonomy and government. Later on, this land was conquered by the Kingdom of Castile and the province was governed by the Lord of Biscay. In this old town of Gernika, the parlament of Biscay met to pass its laws, and in this very place the King of Spain would take an oath promising to respect the autonomy of the Basqueland. A symbol of the Basque independence rises up here, the Tree of Gernika.
This town is also known for the infamous bombing that happened during the Spanish Civil War. That terrible event inspired Pablo Picasso to paint his masterpiece which symbolizes the horrors of war.
On our way back to San Sebastian we will stop in the Flysch of Zumaia to admire the amazing views!
