Detailed itinerary

1

The Groninger Museum is an art museum which opened in 1874, and exhibits modern and contemporary art of local, national, and international artists. The museum has three colourful pavilons designed and completed in 1994.

2

The Folkingestraat is a street in the city center of Groningen, named after the Folkerdinghe family, who lived on the corner with the Akerkhof. The street has been here since the 11th century.

3

You will stop next in front of the Academy Minerva, a Dutch art academy. The academy was founded in 1798 in Groningen as a school for arts, architecture, construction engineering, and seamanship.

4

You'll walk across this small bridge, and stop in the back of the Groningsch Museum. The Groningsch Museum was originally founded in 1853 as a humble collection of lost and found items.

5

Next, you'll walk along the Akerkhof until you reach the side of the Der Aa church. This church is the most important remaining medieval church building in the city. It was built for Catholic worship and taken over by the Protestants during the Reformation.

6

You will be walking along the Broerstraat until you reach a huge building which houses the University of Groningen Library. This university library was founded in 1615, and is one of the oldest libraries in the Netherlands.

7

The Martini graveyard is also known as the 'green heart' of the city of Groningen. Over the centuries, various buildings with an ecclesiastical and administrative function have been built on and around this cemetery.

8

A beautiful modern building that houses the library, a cinema, a nice coffee bar and Storyworld, the Dutch museum for comics, animation and games.

9

This is one of the oldest areas in Groningen, where you can enjoy a drink on one the many terraces.
