This building is one of the oldest structures on the island. On August 1, 1834, a crowd gathered around the lodge while an agent of the British Crown read the Emancipation Proclamation, officially freeing the slaves of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
The Turks & Caicos National Museum is a an absolute historical gem, packed to the rafters with incredible displays and knowledgeable staff as well as a stocked shop selling authentic merchandise largely made by local craftsmen.
The St Mary’s Anglican Church was built in 1899 on Front Street overlooking the water. This charming red roofed church was built in 1900 in order to provide a more convenient place of worship. Grand Turk’s first church, St. Thomas’s, was too far inland for residents of Cockburn Town to travel on foot, especially for evening services.
