Detailed itinerary

1

With a visit to the Advent-decorated Konstanz Minster, your guide will get you in the mood for your tour of the picturesque old town of the Council City on Lake Constance. The venerable cathedral was the scene of one of the most important events of the Middle Ages and the election of a pope. Your guide will tell you the eventful history of this beautiful church while you enjoy the pre-Christmas atmosphere.

2

The oldest district of Konstanz, Niederburg, shines with festive lights during the Advent season. Wander through the old, mystical alleys and take a look at some mysterious medieval nooks.

3

The Rhine Gate Tower was built around the year 1300 as part of the old city walls. It was then an important city gate through which a wooden bridge led to the opposite bank of the Rhine. It is also home to kilometre 0 of the Rhine, one of the most powerful rivers in Europe.

4

This small island is located in front of the old town of Konstanz. Here Dominican monks built a monastery in the 13th century, which lasted until the 16th century and was finally converted into a hotel in the 19th century. The most famous son of the city of Konstanz, Ferdinand Graf Zeppelin, was born here in 1838.

5

The former Jesuit church now serves as an Old Catholic church. It shines with a baroque glow and offers a fascinating insight into the time of the Counter-Reformation, of which our guide knows how to report vividly.

6

Powerful Baroque residences line the square at Konstanz Minster. They were built by wealthy cathedral lords who resided here when Constance was still the bishopric and the Diocese of Constance was the largest north of the Alps. A view of the city relief shows today's Constance, which remained undestroyed during the Second World War. A look into the pyramid protecting the ruins of the “Constantia” castle shows the architecture of the Romans almost 2000 years ago.

7

The trail continues through Wessenbergstraße, which is decorated with shining stars. The many shops here display their atmospherically decorated shop windows that encourage you to buy Christmas gifts. Under the glare of the countless Advent lights, follow your guide through the bustling city centre.

8

Some of the most beautiful old town houses can be found here at the former fish market, which is atmospherically decorated during Advent. The Zollernstraße and the branching Hohenhausgasse are considered by Konstanz residents to be the secret main street of Konstanz, as there are a large number of owner-managed, small shops with a select range of goods that invite you to stroll and browse. Your guide will show you what it looked like 1000 years ago, when the harbour and fish market were still here. You'll be amazed!

9

At the large and lovingly decorated Christmas tree at the Kaiserbrunnen at the market place, the Konstanz Christmas market begins, which extends from here over the harbour to the city garden. Let your guide explain why the metal horse at Kaiserbrunnen has 8 legs and follow him/her through the colourful variety of lovingly decorated huts to the harbour.
