Leave from Tirana at about 07.30 towards border with North Macedonia 120 km, 2.5 hours driving. Arrive in Struga a town in North Macedonia. The main atraction is Black Drin River. It flows out of Lake Ohrid in Struga, It is 149 km long. The Ohrid trout, which is a form of salmon, can also be found in parts of the river at times.
Our next stop will be the town of Ohrid. We will visit the Monastery of St Naum, Church of St. John at Kaneo by the lake, Samoil’s Fortress.
We will continue our visit by driving along the lake towards Pogradec, and before passing the border we will visit Monastery of Sveti Naum.
In prehistoric times Lake Ohrid was home to a settlement of pile dwellers who lived literally on top of the water, on a platform supported by up to 10,000 wooden piles anchored to the lake bed. The remains of the settlement were discovered at this spot and were gradually excavated by an underwater team between 1997 and 2005; the museum is an elaborate reconstruction of the settlement as archaeologists think it would have looked between 1200 and 600 BC.
