We will visit the San Felipe Fortress is an old fortress of the Spanish Empire located north of the island of Hispaniola in the province of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. It was built by King Philip II of Spain and was completed in 1577 by Rengifo de Angulo, the fort's warden. The fortress functioned as a prison on several occasions and the patrician Juan Pablo Duarte was held there as a political prisoner on the orders of Pedro Santana.

The fortress was built to defend the north coast of the country from the English and Dutch, as well as French pirates in search of the abundant gold and silver in the area. It is located on a hill on the "Puntilla del Malecón", overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, its strategic location protects the entrance to the city from the port.
