Polonnaruwa is the second most ancient of Sri Lanka’s kingdoms. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa
remains one of the best planned archaeological relic cities in the country, standing testimony to the
discipline and greatness of the Kingdom’s first rulers and has been declared a World Heritage site by
UNESCO.
The Thuparama Image House at the ancient capital of Polonnaruwa is one of the few buildings where you can see a roof completely made out of bricks. Almost the whole building has survived over 900 years miraculously. The roof is semi-cylindrical in shape. The original name of this image house is not known; therefore the builder of this is also unknown. It is thought that this was built by a minister of King Parakramabahu (1153-1186) called Mahinda to house the tooth relic. Another belief is that this was built by King Vijayabahu I (1070-1110).
Nissanka Latha Mandapaya is a unique structure in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka. A màndapa is a pillared structure that is open on all sides and protects the person inside from the sun with a roof
Sathmahal Prasada in Sri Lanka is a seven storied stepped pyramid located in an elevated area amongst the ancient city Polonnaruwa. The structure has entrances on all four sides and an additional staircase to reach the upper levels. It is believed to be built during the Polonnaruwa era, somewhere between the 11th and 13th century AD. However, no record exists of this pyramid, its builder or purpose.
Shiva devalaya in Polonnaruwa which is one of the 14 Hindu shrines is dedicated to God Shiva in Polonnaruwa. This shrine was built by Chola invaders who ruled ancient Sri Lanka during the 13th century AD. The shrine is located in Polonnaruwa and between the royal palace complex of the King and the sacred quadrangle. The devalaya is full stonework and a pandan architectural style construction.
