Detailed itinerary

1
Stop 1

Betty’s Hope was Antigua’s pioneer sugar plantation, founded about 1650. It is now in ruin, as so many other West Indian sugar estates. The founder of Betty’s Hope was Governor Keynell, whose widow inherited the estate upon his death in 1663, but was forced to flee Antigua during the French occupation in 1666.

Today, though the project is still on its way to completion visitors can still view new and improved exhibits, follow a trail system to view the exposed ruins and the local flora, rest on the picnic benches, enjoy interpretive signage and self guided brochures for the full history of this monument.

2
Stop 2

Devil's Bridge is a natural rock arch in eastern Antigua. It is located on the Atlantic coast near Indian Town Point to the east of Willikies. The area around the arch features several natural blowholes which shoot up water and spray powered by waves from the Atlantic Ocean. This particular location is exposed to waves that are pushed by the Trade Winds with no land between this location and Europe. In 2008 it was declared National Park.

3
Stop 3

In the early eighteenth century, the British Royal Navy recognized the strategic importance of English Harbour in protecting ships from hurricanes and in its position at the south of the island for monitoring French naval activity.

Today, Nelson’s Dockyard provides many sites and activities for visitors to explore and enjoy.

4
Stop 4

Shirley Heights, named after the former governor Sir Thomas Shirley. Overlooking English Harbor and Galleon Beach, Shirley Heights is one of the best spots to get a bird’s-eye view of the island.

5

These very twisty and steep countryside road takes you through the rain forest, which is rich in foliage, plants, mangoes, pineapples, banana trees (fig is the Antiguan word for "banana") and more.

6

(Optional Stop - Time Permitting) Dow's Hill overlooks English Harbour and offers views of the first European settlements on Antigua, established in the early 17th century, and of the fortifications surrounding Nelson's Dockyard. The hill formed part of the estate of Archibald Dow, the civilian storekeeper at the dockyard, who constructed a house there in 1732. The land was compulsorily acquired from Dow in 1789 at a cost of £8,354 to allow fortifications to be constructed to protect the ridgeline from attack from the landward side.

7

(Time Permitting ONLY) Darkwood beach offers some of the most iridescent seas and white beaches on the island, set on a backdrop of hilltops and tropical forestry; the views are both panoramic and spectacular also on a clear day, you can see Montserrat. Being one of the longest stretches of beach there is ample space to take it all in and with warm, alluring sea lapping up on pristine sands, there is plenty of reasons to visit.
