After many years of refurbishment (at least 7 years! ), the Peranakannitat Museum (Baba Museum or Chalermraj Center) has recently reopened its doors in the heart of Phuket Town. The Peranakannitat Museum, located at the crossroads of Phang Nga Road and Phuket Road, is housed inside what was once the 'Standard Chartered Bank.' It's a small museum, but the setting and the Sino-Portuguese architecture are worth a visit. According to a very brief video presented on the second level, the Peranakan initially migrated from China centuries ago and lived in the Thalang region. Apart from that little film, nothing is truly discussed or described at the museum.
Thalang Road is the most well-known street in Phuket's historic district. The municipality and owners were successful in reviving the majority of the historic Sino-Portuguese shophouses and burying the unsightly wires that Thailand is famous for. Thalang has become a selfie hotspot. Small cafés, traditional or fashionable stores, and a few restaurants along the route. They all have one thing in common: they discovered a few years ago that the cutest café drew more customers! They are now all decked with Phuket artefacts from the past, providing even more picture possibilities, and some are very stunning.
Locals call the Phuket Sunday Walking Street Market 'Lard Yai Market,' and it is the most popular attraction in Phuket Town. This 360-metre-long street market was an instant hit, bringing a much-needed event to the old district of town. Every Sunday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. (and sometimes later), Thalang Road transforms into a bustling thoroughfare.
A wonderful discovery is the Thai Hua Museum on Krabi Road in Phuket Town. We went there when it reopened a few years ago, and despite being in a lovely home, it was vacant. Someone, thankfully, saw the potential of such a magnificent position amid the ancient alleys of old Phuket town and turned it into a fascinating exhibit. Museums in Phuket used to be run-down structures, like to the Thalang Museum or even the massive Phuket Mining Museum in Kathu, thus we don't rank them high on our list of Things to Do in Phuket.
