Assisi’s “jewel in the crown” is the grandiose Basilica Papale di San Francesco (Papal Basilica of St. Francis), one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in all of Christendom. You’ll understand why when you see the vast, breathtaking frescoes by Giotto, the most famous painter in Medieval times.

the Basilica di Santa Chiara (Basilica of St. Clare), the simple church where you can still admire the Crucifix of St. Damien which spoke directly to St. Francis and whose powerful message of peace and love of the environment still speaks to us today.

The main square of Assisi is the very heart of the town. It is home to the fabulous Roman Temple and all the Medieval Public buildings.

The Temple of Minerva is an ancient Roman building in Assisi which dates back to 1st century BC. It currently houses the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, built in 1539 and renovated in Baroque style in the 17th century.

The Rocca Maggiore is a fortress that overlooks the historical town center of Assisi. The fortress is a lively example of 14th century military architecture, built in Albornoz style with a square plant and a Polygonal Tower. It offers a breathtaking panoramic view over the Umbrian Valley exteding from Perugia (north) to Spoleto (south).
