Australia's oldest zoo, Melbourne Zoo is set in lovely botanic gardens just a short trip from the centre of the city. Because its design is sympathetic to the natural environments of the animals who live here, your exploration will take you through diverse habitats from tropical rainforests to ‘African' grasslands.

Highlights include the Australian bush setting (where you can meet some remarkable indigenous animals), and African and Asian rainforests (the former is home to gorillas and Mandrills, the latter to the magnificent Trail of the Elephants exhibit). On summer evenings the zoo puts on even more of a show with live bands (Zoo Twilights) and special seasonal events. No wonder this is one of Melbourne's most popular attractions.

Get up close and personal with incredible African animals only 30 minutes outside of Melbourne at Werribee Zoo.

Next door to the Werribee Park Mansion and bounded by the Werribee River is Werribee Open Range Zoo. Animals from the grasslands of Australia, Africa and Asia live in conditions as close as possible to those of their natural habitats.

Here you'll get the chance to be right among them all on a 50-minute Wildlife Safari which is included in your entrance ticket.

Stop 16

Journey back to old Melbourne, a time when the spices of China Town masked the smoke of the opium dens, poor houses supplied bodies in the name of advancing medical science and famous opera singer Federici gave his most dramatic performance, plummeting to death in front of his audience.

Or explore King William's Town, the original capital of Victoria, by lamp light. Steeped with history, apparitions, alleyways and lager it was once a thriving town full of colourful ladies, drunken sailors and convicts. Visit abandoned morgues, forgotten burial grounds and hidden laneways in Victoria's most historic seaport. Visit Victoria's oldest morgue and Australia's Timeball Tower.
