Built in by the Portuguese in 1482, the Elmina Castle initially served a trading post before playing a key role in the infamous transatlantic slave trade.
The Benya Lagoon serves as the soul of Elmina, here we will learn about the spiritual connection between the people and the lagoon.
Seated in the heart of Elmina is the Methodist Church built in 1900. On our way we will also learn about buildings that have survived from the colonial era. We will also visit the Nana Kobina Gyan Square, named after the king of Elmina who stood against the British.
The Dutch Cemetery is locate in an area formerly known as the Garden of Elmina. The cemetery was built in 1806 under the orders of the Dutch governor Johannes Hoogenbom.
Situated on the Roman hill is the St Joseph's Minor Basilica, this church is a testament to the early influence of religion in colonial Elmina and Ghana. Climb up the 121 steps to the hill top, where we have a panoramic view of the Elmina township and the salt mining ponds.
Our tour will end at the Benya Shrine. Our guide will tell us the role of Nana Benya and the pact made between man and god which birthed the town of Elmina.
