Founded in 1884, Hotorgshallen is the oldest food market in Sweden. It used to have a strong peasant character at the end of 19th century.
It was divided into two sections:
-Meat, fish ,veggies and flowers,
-Milk and hay
The hay did remain until 1856 , then moved to Norrmalmstorg .
The historic market square dating back to the 13th century ,originally established as a hay market!
The square received its name in 1672 ( 17th century).
The highlight of the tour is a visit to the city Hall ( Stadshuset) venue of the annual Nobel Prize Banquet ) where we enjoy a guided tour of the red brick structure.
The fortress-like building is known for its tower topped with 3 golden crowns ( the emblem of Sweden).
Then continue to Gamla Stan ( Old Town) founded in 1252 ,enjoy a walk through the narrow cobbled streets, alleys and medieval atmosphere of the 16th to 18th century.
We stop by Stortorget ( great square) home to the Nobel museum, the Swedish Academy.
Also ,housing the Royal Palace the residence of the Swedish Monarchy.
The huge compound, dating from the 18th century was designed by French architect Nicodemus Tessin in Baroque style.
Södermalm evolved from rural area between 13th and 17th centuries.
Later, in 19th century a working- class district. Söder has a history as a supplier of pastures ,a centre for manufacturing
and shipping.
In the 20th century ,transformed into a fashionable, Bohemian district known for its trendy cafés, shops and artistic community.
