Hindagala is a typical cave temple from the Kandyan period. But there is something special about it. This is one of the very few places with original Anuradhapura-period temples.

But it can be considered to be the best specimen of a typical type of temple of the Kandyan period, namely a shrine on stilts or more precisely: on stone boulders, protecting the wooden shrine from vermin and humidity.
The Vishnu shrine in Dodanwela once kept the crown of the Kandyan kings, which was the outcome of a vow given prior to a victoriuous battle against the Portuguese in the nearby Danthure. The Vishnu Devale of Dodanwela resembles the more famous one in Kandy.
