About this experience

It happens quite often on Sao Miguel island to come across breathless views. It is relaxing and inspiring to sit on the edge of a volcano, watching at lakes located on this beautiful island in the middle of the ocean, and wondering how nature was able to create such a miracle.

This tour covers the main highlights of the west half to São Miguel island, including Sete Cidades, Fogo lake, Caldeira Velha, Ribeira Grande, and the pineapple greenhouses.

If you are staying in Ponta Delgada city our guide will pick you up at your accommodation between 9:00 – 9:20. If staying outside of Ponta Delgada city, please come meet our guide at the tourism office in Ponta Delgada downtown or contact us to request a pick-up.

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1

Start the day with a visit to the pineapple greenhouses, in the surroundings of Ponta Delgada, to learn all about the unique growth process of the Azorean pineapple.

Stop 2

Leave the city towards Sete Cidades, stopping in little-known small crater lakes of great beauty and enjoying views of the island. Go on a short walk to reach the unbelievable lookout of Boca do Inferno, with a very unique view over the caldera of Sete Cidades.

After that visit the “King’s view”, the main postcard of the Azores, with a perfect viewpoint over the main Sete Cidades lake.

Enjoy a lunch of delicious authentic Azorean food, before reaching the westernmost point of the island where lay the magnificent rocks of Mosteiros. Enjoy a panoramic ride along the spectacular northern coast of the island, stopping at some magnificent lookouts, including the most stunning cliffs of the island.

Explore Caldeira Velha, an exotic place of dense vegetation and thermals springs.

End the day in beauty with views of Fogo Lake, the most isolated and well-preserved lake of São Miguel.

Don’t forget to bring warm clothes and raincoat (weather conditions change quickly in the Azores and are worse at high viewpoints). Sturdy shoes (tour requires short walks on the ground floor) and sunblock.

After the tour, the guide will take you back to Ponta Delgada city.
