Detailed itinerary

1

Meet the guide at Cruise Ship Port or at another location in the center of Ponta Delgada.

On this walking tour of Ponta Delgada, you will see the main attractions of the city such as Ponta Delgada City Center, Vasco da Gama and São Francisco Squares. You'll see one of the most illustrious monuments of Ponta Delgada, the Portas da Cidade (City Gates) were built in the eighteenth century next to the old pier and then transferred to the Gonçalo Velho Cabral Square during the construction of the seaside Prince Henry Avenue. Formed of three arches, featuring in the middle the royal and the city’s coat of arms, these gates are the city’s postcard.

2

Located near the town gate just off the seafront, the Parish Church of Saint Sebastian dates from 1533 when construction was started on the former site of a chapel dedicated to the same saint. Your trip to Ponta Delgada will not be complete until you visit the Church of St. Sebastian. Built according to the ancient Azorean architecture, this church will entice you with its simple façade. The exterior of the church is simple in style, with oceanic murals adorning the walls. The interior, however, is beautifully ornate. The biblical murals and tastefully decorated altar are sure to stay in your heart. Do not miss the bell tower next to the church. You will be able to see the ocean and feel the breeze as the bell rings.

3

St. Peter's Church is a building from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which took the place of an old temple from the sixteenth century. Inside, it features a statue of orgado from the sixteenth century. The ‘medieval’ parade known as Cavalhadas that takes place every year on June 29, St. Peter’s day, culminates in this church.

4

This church formed part of a Franciscan monastery built in the 17C. Its huge nave, built in Mannerist and Baroque styles, is decorated with opulent gilded woodwork, furniture made from jacaranda, and 18-century azulejos.

5

Fort Saint Blaise considered to be the most important example of military architecture of the 16th century and the most powerful fortification on the island, it was built on a point in the primitive berth of Ponta Delgada, with the function of its defense against attacks from pirates and corsairs, formerly frequent in this region of the Atlantic Ocean. A military museum occupies some of the buildings.

6

Explore the most beautiful botanical garden of Ponta Delgada, see some artwork.
In the end, the guide will show you the traditional market, with the opportunity to taste some local’s fruits and taste some kinds of cheese made in the Azores.
