Detailed itinerary

1

The Old Town is an open-air town museum located in the Aarhus Botanical Gardens. In 1914 the museum opened as the world's first open-air museum of its kind, concentrating on town culture rather than village culture. Today the museum consists of 75 historical buildings collected from 20 townships in all parts of the country.

2
Stop 2

It is a small underground museum, located at the square of Skt. Clemens Market. It is located beneath the Nordea bank building and on the site of an archaeological excavation of the 1960s, 3 m (9.8 ft) below street level. The excavations revealed various Viking Age structures, items, and parts of a human skeleton. The museum provides information regarding the history of Viking Age Aarhus.
(closed on weekends!)

3

The construction of Aarhus Cathedral began in the 12th century, dedicated to the patron saint of sailors, St. Clemens. The cathedral is situated on the port side of the central square in the inner city. The church can seat around 1200 people. Aarhus Cathedral has a number of fresco paintings dating from the 1470 to 1520. The paintings of St Christopher and St Clement are the tallest in the country.

4

The name ARoS refers to the Old Danish name of the city Aarhus, Áros, while the capitalized letters of the name hint at the Latin word for art, namely ars. It is the oldest public art museum in Denmark outside of Copenhagen. On 8 April 2004, ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum opened with exhibitions in a brand new modern building. ARoS has a large art collection with works from the Golden Age until today, a changing selection of which are on display in the museum halls.

5
Stop 5

Aarhus Teater was built in the 1890s at the initiative of the citizens of Aarhus. The building is an architectonic gem of the Jugend style. It was inaugurated on September 15th in 1900 and became a listed landmark in 1990.

6
Stop 6

The church dates back to 1880 and was built in the Gothic style. The high slender lines, the pointed arch windows and doorways, the flying buttresses over the aisles, the glazing bars of the windows etc.; the church exterior stands exactly as it did in the 19th century. However, the interior has seen significant changes over the years.
