About this experience

It is a unique religious tour of Cairo in which we will visit the hanging church, Saint Sergius church, Saint Simon the tanner monastery (known as the cave church). We will also visit the Jewish Ben Ezra synagogue and the Islamic mosque of Amr. Therefore, it is unique because it has all religions in one tour.

The Church of Saint Sergius and Bacchus, also known as Abu Serga, is built upon an ancient Roman fort in Old Cairo. The history of the church is still being debated. Some scholars believe that it dates to the late fourth to early fifth centuries AD, while others believe that it should approximately be dated to 17th century AD.

This church has acquired a special religious status among Coptic churches because it is associated with the Holy Family's journey through Egypt. It is named after renowned early fourth century AD saints, Sergius and Bacchus, both of whom were martyred at al-Resafa in Syria for their Christian beliefs.

Stop 5

Built above one of the fortress towers of the Babylon, the Church of St. George is a Greek Orthodox church in Coptic Cairo. It was originally built in the 7th century, but the current structure was rebuilt following a 1904 fire. St. George is the only round church in Egypt, but unlike the original Church of the Holy Sepulchre and its many imitators, this is only for practical reasons – it is built atop the foundations of a Roman round tower.

Mar is a title of respect in Syriac, literally meaning my lord. It is given to all saints and bishops. Girgis is the Arabized adoption of the Greek word Georgios, thus Mar Girgis means St. George in English.
