3

Located to the north of central Hiraizumi, the temple complex of Chuson-ji began construction in the beginning of the 12th century when Hiraizumi was being built as a political and administrative base for Japan's northern territories, and took about a quarter of a century to complete. Of the structures in the complex, Chuson-ji Temple's Konjiki-do (Golden Hall) is the only structure that remains as it was when it was founded 900 years ago, and is Japan's first structure to be registered as a National Treasure. In addition, the Chuson-ji Temple area has been registered as a World Heritage Site in 2011 as "Hiraizumi Cultural Heritage."

4

Visit Oshu City Traditional Industries Museum [Nambu Ironware Museum] and see how Nambu ironware is made through videos and displays faithfully recreating a Nambu ironware foundry from the early Meiji period (1868-1912). Oshu City is also the hometown of a current major leaguer world-renowned for being a two-way player. There is a brass sculpture of an outstretched hand made using Nambu ironware techniques, and visitors can actually shake hands with it.

5

The history of ironware in this region goes back 900 years ago when Chuson-ji Temple was built. The industry took root as casters were invited into the region, producing items such as temple bells for Chuson-ji. Visit a foundry that makes Nanbu ironware, a traditional craft deeply rooted in the region. *Taking photos and videos is prohibited.
