Wat Phra Yai was built in the 1940s when Pattaya was a tiny fishing village. The Buddha statue was constructed in 1977. An 18-meter tall gold-painted statue of the Buddha graces the top of Big Buddha Hill Pattaya. This magnificent image is in the centre of Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha Temple) – Pattaya’s most important Buddhist temple.

Khao Chi Chan is a famous place as it features a giant sculptural image of Lord Buddha erected on a massive cliff. It was built in 1995 as an initiative from the then-Supreme Patriarch, who felt it was a waste to destroy these marble mountains, so he ordered the creation of the giant Buddha image on the cliff cut in half. It was also built to honour His Majesty King Bhumibol on the occasion of his Golden Jubilee.
