Once one of Scotland’s largest castles, Urquhart saw great conflict during its 500 years as a medieval fortress. Control of the castle passed back and forth between the Scots and English during the Wars of Independence. The power struggles continued, as the Lords of the Isles regularly raided both castle and glen up until the 1500s.

The last of the government troops garrisoned here during the Jacobite Risings blew up the castle when they left. Urquhart’s iconic ruins remain, offering glimpses into medieval times and the lives of its noble residents.

So, just how much do we really know about Nessie and her extraordinary Loch Ness home? Well, whether you’re planning an unforgettable monster-spotting trip and excited to discover all that Loch Ness offers, or just brushing up on your monster facts, you’re in the right place!

The Great Glen Distillery was established by two friends during the first lockdown of 2020. Hotelier Daniel Campbell and renowned chef Adam Dwyer built the distillery in what was Daniels late mother’s shop, in the small Highland village of Drumnadrochit.
Together Daniel and Adam began tinkering with the idea of establishing a distillery that would draw its inspiration from the local area and set to work developing a recipe that used some local botanicals and water sourced from Loch Ness before refining and releasing their signature Great Glen Gin in July 2021, which takes its name from the Great Glen fault line that was created by glaciers more than 10,000 years ago.
