Orientation
8 AM St Andrews Church
Our first destination is St Andrew’s Church which is also known as the Kirk. Completed in 1818 it is the only Scottish church in Kolkata. Designed by M/s Burn, Currie & Co. its steeple was higher than that of the then Anglican Cathedral of Calcutta St. John’s Church. Bishop Middleton was much annoyed with this. Our guide will elaborate more on the controversy regarding the spire which ruffled many feathers!
St. Paul’s Cathedral
We visit the first Episcopal Church of the eastern world, St Paul’s Cathedral. It took 8 years to build this masterpiece. Bishop Wilson consecrated St Paul’s Cathedral on 8th October 1847. Guest will find a strong resemblance to the famed Norwich Cathedral especially with its Gothic stained glass windows and frescoes in Florentine Renaissance style. We will get to see sculptures and like the “Episcopal Throne” and an ornamented wall – Reredo, carved with incidents from the life of St. Paul.
South Park Cemetery
South Park Cemetery was the largest Christian cemetery outside Europe and America in the 19th century. This 8-acre necropolis has 1900 graves belonging to prominent British citizens and high officials of the East India Company. One of the better-maintained tombs is that of Sir William Jones, who first came to India in 1783 as a Supreme Court Judge, later founded the Asiatic Society and translated important Sanskrit scriptures such as the Bhagwad Gita into English.
Peace & Tranquility at Mother’s House
We visit Mother’s House, the erstwhile residence of Mother Teresa who had dedicated her entire life to the care of the underprivileged. This building is also the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity the organisation founded by Mother Teresa. We will see the sisters of Missionaries of Charity at work for the upliftment of the underprivileged, visit a museum with Mother Teresa’s belongings and pay our respects at the tomb of our Angel of Mercy.
