In the early years of Christianity, the Evangelist St. John resided in Ephesus, dedicating his life to spreading the teachings of Jesus and gathering new followers to the faith. Historical accounts suggest that after returning from his exile on the island of Patmos, St. John spent his final days in Ephesus, where he eventually passed away. His devoted disciples buried him on the southern slope of Ayasuluk Hill. Centuries later, in the 4th century A.D., the Roman Emperor Justinian honored his memory by commissioning the construction of one of the largest and most significant basilicas of early Christianity directly over the sacred burial site of St. John the Evangelist.
