The Leaning Tower, with its distinctive tilt, began leaning during its construction in the 12th century due to the soft ground unable to adequately support the structure's weight. The lean further progressed until the completion of construction in the 14th century. Subsequent remedial work undertaken between 1993 and 2001 stabilized the structure, reducing the tilt to 3.97 degrees.
