It was Perikles in the fifth century B.C., who coordinated the construction of the site’s most important architectural masterpieces. The Temple of Olympian Zeus found in the southeast of Athens is also referred to as Olympieion. Its construction lasted several centuries, from 510 BC to 131 AD and it is one of the greatest ancient temples of Zeus as well as one of the most famous marble buildings ever erected in the ancient world. There were originally 104 gigantic Corinthian columns 16 of which remain standing today, with one of them lying on the ground.

It had been an inspiration for almost 2500 years ! The man who first had the idea was Periandros the tyrant from Corinth. He found it difficult on the way but he came up to another interesting idea ! The name of it was diolkos. For those who had money and didn’t want to sail around Peloponnese peninsula. Finally after several people trying to succeed in this huge achievement, the canal was constructed in 1893 !

Splendid buildings such as the Doric temple of Apollo (560 BC), the Isthmian Games (similar to those in Olympia), the agora, the fountain of Peirene, the Roman concert hall, the baths and so on are of great interest.
