After meeting your tour conductor in the morning, you’ll board a comfortable coach and head toward Ibaraki Prefecture.
Your first stop is a historic sake brewery in Hitachiota City, where you’ll discover the craftsmanship behind Japan’s beloved rice wine. Stroll through the brewery’s atmospheric wooden halls and learn how sake and plum wine are made using time-honored techniques. Then, enjoy a tasting session featuring smooth sake and fragrant umeshu (plum wine).
Next, after 20 minutes bus ride you’ll enjoy a traditional lunch featuring Hitachi Aki soba, a premium buckwheat noodle variety grown in Ibaraki. This dish is served in a unique local style: dipping the noodles into hearty kenchin soup, a savory broth filled with root vegetables. Paired with crispy tempura, this meal is a comforting and authentic taste of Ibaraki’s culinary heritage.
After an hour of a comfortable bus ride, continue to Fukuroda Falls, one of Japan’s 3 most famous waterfalls. Cascading from a height of 120 meters and a width of 73 meters, this majestic waterfall transforms into a spectacular icefall during the coldest winter days. When temperatures drop below freezing, the rushing water solidifies into shimmering ice, creating a breathtaking natural sculpture. Please note: the frozen waterfall is a natural phenomenon and may vary depending on weather conditions, but even in its flowing state, Fukuroda Falls is a stunning sight year-round.
As evening approaches, you’ll head to Kitaibaraki, the birthplace of the famous anko nabe (monkfish hot pot). It takes around 1 hour 20 minutes to get to the restaurant. This winter delicacy features tender monkfish simmered with vegetables in a rich broth enhanced by the fish’s flavorful liver. Known for its collagen and delicate taste, monkfish is a seasonal highlight in northern Ibaraki. Your dinner includes a full monkfish course, offering a true gourmet experience that warms you from the inside out.
Hop on a bus for 20 more minutes and end your day with a visit to TeamLab’s immersive art installation in Izura. Opened in 2024, this unique project transforms a hidden valley into a magical world of light and sound. As you walk through the illuminated landscape, interactive digital artworks blend seamlessly with nature, creating an enchanting experience that feels like stepping into a dream. It’s a perfect finale to a day of seasonal beauty and cultural discovery.
