To experience the Haipai culture of Shanghai, you must go to West Nanjing Road—a road where past, present and future meet, harmony in work and life, and so comfortable for walking.
We will take West Nanjing Road subway station as the starting point, shuttle between high-end shopping malls, old communities in the 1930s and villas in the Republic of China, feel the magical combination of old and new Shanghai, and explore the differences between the upper and the working class. It is more likely to meet old people who grew up there and listen to their stories of historical changes in authentic Shanghai dialect.
During this walk, the architecture, people, and shops are fashionable and diverse. The past and the present are in harmony. I will also tell some anecdotes.
Jing'an Villa, a hidden residential neighbourhood that survives between the skyscrapers. Built in 1930s, these olden days architecture survives along Shanghainese grandparents who probably lived here all their lives. We can walk through this quiet neighbourhood and talk to the local people, get the feeling how Shanghai people's normal life. Next to it, there's another neighbourhood called Anlefang, which was also built in 1930s for working class, where we can compare the difference between upper and working class in Shanghai at that time.
