About this experience

Northwest 4x4 excursion, forest, fauna & flora, waterfalls, & volcanic pools. Enjoy the countryside off the beaten track in a 4x4 vehicle with knowledgeable, experienced and fun guide. We will show you the Northwestern side of Madeira, you will meet the local traditions, culture, history, "levadas", forest, fauna & flora, waterfalls, swim at the volcanic lava pools, local food, traditional drinks including the "poncha". On this experience you will have a 15 minutes easy walk at a levada, you will see the Fanal forest with the native trees "Ocotea foetens" )some of these are over 500 years old). On this tour we will pass at , Serra d'Água, Ginjas, Estanquinhos, Paúl da Serra, Fanal, Ribeira da Janela, Porto Moniz, Seixal and São Vicente. If the weather alows, you have time to swim at the volcanic pools.

Wood was the first of livelihood and income for the early settlers to Madeira, and due to the abundance of vegetation in Serra de Água the sawmills, commercial exportation of wood was very profitable.
