In just over an hour and a half you will arrive in the town of Orvieto, one of Umbria’s most well-preserved and important medieval towns. Your first stop in the city is the stunning Cathedral of Orvieto, with its incredible golden mosaics and gothic architecture. Be sure to take a look inside at the wonderful artwork, frescoes, and decorations added throughout the centuries.
Next, we will reserve a space for you on a small group Orvieto Underground tour to explore the underground tunnels and caves that are hidden beneath the surface. This seemingly endless network of passageways and workshops are carved into the volcanic stone, with some dating back thousands of years to Etruscan and Roman times.
After lunch, your driver will take you on a panoramic drive along the country roads until you reach the breathtaking town of Civita di Bagnoregio, a place where time stands still. The town is said to be “dying” as it slowly slips into the surrounding valleys year after year.
What remains is a small “island” area where only a pedestrian bridge connects the town to the other side of the ravine. In fact, there are no cars in the small village. The photo opportunities are plentiful and you will have time to walk across and explore this charming town with only a handful of permanent residents.
