About this experience

The city is important to because of the way Vesuvius both destroyed and preserved it. Pompeii was buried at least 19 feet (6 metres) of ash and other volcanic debris. Herculaneum is famous as one of the few ancient cities to be preserved nearly intact, as the ash that blanketed the town protected it against looting and the elements.
