This was the site of the massacre of 97 soldiers from the Royal Norfolk Regiment by the SS Division Totenkopf on 27th May 1940 during the retreat to Dunkirk

In May 1940, the Zuydcoote Sanatrium was converted into a field hospital for the retreating allied troops and operated until the end of the evacuation.
Nearby on the beach the wreck of Crested Eagle can be seen at low tide, it was attacked by German dive bombers and sunk on 28th May 1940
