2

Abdeen Palace marks the beginning of modern Cairo, reflecting Khedive Ismail’s vision to reshape the city into a European-inspired capital. Under his direction, Cairo saw the creation of wide boulevards, grand squares, elegant palaces, bridges over the Nile, and lush gardens adorned with rare trees and palms.

Commissioned by Khedive Ismail after his rise to power in 1863, the palace took ten years to complete. It was built on land once owned by Sultan Abidin Bey, a military commander under Mohamed Ali. Khedive Ismail acquired the property from Abidin Bey’s widow and transformed the site into the majestic Saray, expanding it to include the surrounding grounds.

Stop 3

The Giza Pyramid Complex, also known as the Giza Necropolis, is located on Egypt’s Giza Plateau. It includes the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, their associated temple complexes, and the iconic Great Sphinx. These monumental structures were built during the Fourth Dynasty of Egypt’s Old Kingdom. The site also features several ancient cemeteries and the remains of a workers’ village that once housed the laborers who constructed the pyramids.

4
Stop 4

The Great Sphinx of Giza, commonly known as the Sphinx, is a massive limestone statue depicting a reclining sphinx—an iconic mythical creature with a lion’s body and a human head. Facing east, it stands proudly on the Giza Plateau, along the west bank of the Nile River in Giza, Egypt.

5

Papyrus, an early precursor to the modern book, is believed to have originated in Egypt as early as the First Dynasty. It was made from the papyrus plant, which once grew abundantly along the banks of the Nile River.
