After Buddha’s Mahaparivana (Passing away) the great Maurayan ruler Ashoka developed many sites related to Buddha’s life and deeds. So he also developed sankhisa and like other places installed are unique pillars. The top of the pillar is adorned with an elephant unlike other pillars which are usually having a lion. It is associated with the representation of the dram that queen mother Maya had in her dram of elephant. This pillar was found during the excavation near the temple. It is believed that at sankisa lord Buddha descended from haven through a golden ladder after giving sermon to his mother his place finds a mention in the Ramayana and also in the travelogue of the Chinese traveler Hieum Tsang who called this place Kapittha. Important attraction you see at this place is the temple of Lord Buddha and his impressive idol. After finishing the tour you will be driven back to your Agra hotel in the same car
