Built-in 1956 on the foundations of the 1934 King Alexander Bridge, which was destroyed in World War II, it reconnected Belgrade and Zemun as the only motorway bridge at the time. One of the two oldest fortresses in Europe
Built around 1460 on the bank of the river at the mouth of the Sava River to the Danube. It is about 22 meters high. Its purpose was the protection of the entrance to the medieval port. Built by Hungarians to guard against the Turks from accessing the old and slightly forgotten Danube harbor. Belgrade was then a trading crossroad between Venice and Istanbul - the west and the east. It served as the watchtower and defense rampart.
For decades, it successfully prevented Turkish penetration into the center of Europe. Great Greek revolutionary, Rigas Feraios, was executed here.
The legend says that the tower, was impregnable when after the heavy fighting the Turks occupied almost the whole Belgrade fortress, soared into the air, and flew to the Lower Town far from their reach, so they never got a hold of it. Since then, it has stood here where it is today, testifying to its invincibility.
