Detailed itinerary

1

Transfer from Zagreb (agreed pick up location) to Vukovar in comfortable car or van.

2

The Ovčara memorial home is the place where many civilians and wounded in the Homeland War died during the aggression and occupation of Vukovar in 1991. The hangar where the crimes took place, in memory of the victims, was turned into a modern memorial center that covers about 300 square meters. The entire Ovčara Memorial Home is in the dark, because the crimes took place at night.

3

The Memorial Cemetery of Homeland War Victims is the largest mass grave in Europe after II. World War. They say that a picture says more than a thousand words, but actually being in this place is an indescribable experience. The words remain in the air and your only desire is to store the image of a field with 938 white crosses, each of which symbolizes one victim, exhumed here, in this place where you are standing. Entire generations are buried here, the youth of Vukovar and all parts of Croatia.

4

The atmosphere that reigned in the Vukovar hospital in the autumn of 1991 is shown here in a poignant way - a moment frozen in time. In the basement of the Vukovar Hospital, the lives of several hundred wounded and hospital staff during the months-long occupation of the city have been faithfully reconstructed. You are offered with a multimedia presentation of wartime events inside the hospital during the fall of 1991. For the permanent exhibition, a material so common for hospital everyday life - plaster - was used - figures of people were made from it in order to evoke the time that has stopped here in the space.

5

Vukovar Water Tower is a symbol of Croatian unity and it has recently become a member of the World Federation of Great Towers (in the company of the Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building, Burj Khalifa and other world-famous towers). The tower was directly hit 640 times, despite this, it remained intact and in the same place for the entire time of the battle for the city this is why its wounds and scars, proves the effort and sacrifice of all Croats for a free Croatia. There you take a scenic view of the city and Danube river from the tower.

6

The Baroque complex of the Eltz castle houses the Museum of the City of Vukovar, winner of the Silltto European award for the best museum in Europe. There you get insight about the archaeological past of the Vukovar region, Historical development of Vukovar through centuries, life on a loess ridge which presents traditional life in area, Barbaric destruction of the city during the Homeland War, “Root strength” which presents life in exile, Vukovar today presents life in a multinational community.

7

The Memorial Center of the Homeland War, located in the Barracks of the 204th HV Brigade, is open to provide you comprehensive overview of the chronology and events related to the Homeland War in the entire Republic of Croatia in one place. The Memorial Center takes care of maintaining the memory of the Homeland War, preserving memorial locations and informing about the historical importance of war events.
