About this experience

Departure at 7 in the morning to reach the "Secas" lagoon. Then we continue up to 4000 m.a.s.l. (13000 feet) to observe different bird species. Then we advance to the "La Mica" lagoon also to observe different bird species. After that, we reach the Viewpoint of the Isco where the Andean condor sleeps. After that, we will return to the restaurant “Tambo Condor” where we will have a typical Andean lunch and observe the condors and more hummingbirds. We can watch almost 25 species of birds. Then return to the city of Quito.

Departure at 7 in the morning to reach Secas Lagoon ("Laguna de Secas" in Spanish), is a lagoon located in the Pichincha province, Ecuador.

The closest town is Pintag. Secas lagoon was formed when the Antisana volcano erupted more than 400 years ago, its lava divided into parts the current of the nearest river forming what is now known as the "Secas" Lagoon (Laguna de Secas).

These huge petrified lava rocks are a distinctive feature in the rain-forest of the Cayambe-Coca reserve.

On the grounds of the EPMAPS control hut, we can do birdwatching and observation of mammals such as Carunculated Cara Cara, Andean Lapwing, Andean Gull, Páramo Pipit, Black Faced Ibis, White-Tailed Deer, etc.

Also on the lagoon of “La Mica” we can observe species of birds such as Andean ruddy duck, Andean Teal, Andean Coot, silvery grebe, yellow-billed pintail, etc.

Passing through the village of Pintag we reach the viewpoint of the Isco where the Andean condor sleeps, we will also observe different species of hummingbirds such as the giant hummingbird, Ecuadorian hillstar, black-tailed trainbearer, Tyrian metal tail.

Then we continue up to 4000 m (almost 13000 feet) to observe carunculated cara-cara, black-faced ibis, variable hawk, Andean Gull, Andean Lapwing, paramo pipit, etc. Then we advance to the lagoon of “La Mica” to observe different species of birds in the lagoon such as Andean ruddy duck, Andean Teal, Andean Coot, silvery grebe, yellow-billed pintail, etc.
