Knossos Palace, just a short drive from Heraklion, is the most iconic symbol of Minoan civilization — and possibly the oldest city in Europe. Wandering through its ruins, you’ll come across vibrant frescoes, stone staircases, and giant clay jars that once stored oil and grain. It’s a place where myth and history overlap, especially when you hear about King Minos, the Minotaur, and the legendary Labyrinth said to lie beneath your feet.
Much of what we see today was brought to light by British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans, who partially restored parts of the palace — a move that still sparks debate. But whether you're a purist or a dreamer, Knossos has a strange power. It's not just stones and walls; it’s whispers from a world that lived, ruled, danced, and vanished, leaving behind stories carved in dust and clay.
"Once your journey through the ancient halls of Knossos is complete, the day is still young—choose an extra experience to fill it with flavor, craft, or countryside charm."
Option 1: Olive Oil Mill – A Taste of Cretan Land
Step into a working olive mill run by a local family that’s been producing extra virgin olive oil for generations. Here, you won’t just watch machines—you’ll learn about tree varieties, harvesting techniques, and the timeless cold-press method.
Taste their award-winning olive oils with a side of homemade olives, rusks, and sometimes even rakomelo if the owner’s in a good mood (and he usually is).
A truly heartfelt stop—no fancy shows, just real people and liquid gold.
Duration: ~1.5 hours
Location: Peza
Option 2: Pottery Workshop – Clay & Craft
Cretan pottery isn’t just art—it’s survival, ritual, and heritage. Visit a small, family-run pottery studio where clay still tells stories. You’ll see skilled hands form amphorae, cooking pots, and old-style water jugs as easily as folding dough.
Try the wheel yourself if you're feeling brave, or simply enjoy a rich explanation of ancient and modern techniques.
They might even bake your creation for shipping if time allows.
Duration: ~1.5 hours
Location: Thrapsano or Anopolis
Option 3: Natural Soap Workshop – Nature in Your Hands
A fragrant, feel-good stop! Discover how olive oil, rosemary, thyme, and lavender become gentle Cretan soaps in this artisan lab.
You’ll see how locals mix and pour soap by hand, learn about traditional recipes passed from grandmothers, and of course, take home a few delightful samples.
This is a quiet, humble experience—one that lingers on the skin and in the memory.
Duration: ~1.5 hours
Location: Heraklion or nearby
Option 4: Boutique Winery Visit – From Vine to Glass
Crete’s wine story began 4,000 years ago, and some say it hasn’t stopped improving. At a small, family-owned winery in Peza or Archanes, you’ll stroll among the vines, tour the production area, and head into the cellar.
Taste 4–6 wines made from indigenous grapes like Vidiano, Kotsifali, Thrapsathiri, and Liatiko, guided by a local sommelier or winemaker.
Often paired with cheese, rusks, or olives—it’s a true sensory education in Cretan terroir.
Duration: ~1.5 hours
Location: Peza or Archanes area
Option 5: Archaeological Museum of Heraklion – The Crown of Minoan Art
After wandering the ruins of Knossos, this museum is the perfect next step. Home to the world’s greatest Minoan collection, it houses legendary artifacts: the Bull-Leaping fresco, the Phaistos Disc, snake goddesses, and a treasure trove of pottery and jewelry.
Whether you're a history buff or casual visitor, it’s a stunning showcase of the art, mystery, and symbolism of Europe’s first advanced civilization.
Like Knossos, the museum visit does not include a certified guide unless arranged in advance and is subject to availability. Guide cost is extra. Guide fee is extra.
Duration: ~1–1.5 hours
Location: Heraklion Center
