Drive to Mati Si (Mati Temple Grottoes) in the morning,Mati Temple Grottoes is located 65 km southeast of Zhangye. The Grottoes were built in 5th century, as a important Buddhist site for Buddhist studies.Due to its special location, Qilian mountain surrounded,both Chinese monks and Tibetan monks studied here. Mati temple is indeed one of the first places where the monks from abroad settled to preach Buddhism. The caves were used as altars to pray to Buddha for refuge but also for traders taking this legendary road.
