It was initiated by His Majesty King Mswati III primarily to commemorate the life history of King Sobhuza II, who led the Swazi nation to independence from Britain in 1968 and he died in 1982. The park is the only one of its kind. It was built in a place where King Sobhuza was laid in state before he was taken for burial at EMbilaneni (a royal burial mountain) in the Southern part of Swaziland, where some of the Swazi kings are buried.
