It's one of the most important archeological zones in the state of Quintana Roo. Tulum means "enclosure or wall", so you will be able to see a lot of the Mayan culture within these walls. This city was built on a cliff from which you can see the turquoise shades of the Caribbean Sea in all its splendor.
This Mayan site is still largely unexcavated; however, visitors can enjoy shaded walkways in the original roads and see 3 settlements that show the architecture, 2 ball courts and climb the highest Mayan pyramid. Archeologists have estimated that 6,000 structures exist, but only 3 settlements are for public viewing.
