The enchanting Herrenchiemsee Castle, also known as the Bavarian Versailles, was built by the mad King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1878. The castle stands in the middle of Bavaria's largest lake, Chiemsee, and is surrounded by a beautiful park with many fountains, statues and floral decorations. The luxurious building was modelled on Versailles with the idea of creating a 'temple of glory' for the French King Louis XIV, whom the Bavarian monarch admired. The royal interiors are inlaid with gold, the Hall of Mirrors is even larger than the original in Versailles, rare paintings, richly decorated furniture and unique frescoes. Particularly noteworthy is the replica of the bedroom from the Palace of Versailles and the marble bathroom with the King's bathtub. In addition to the charming interiors, the King Louis II Museum is located on the ground floor. In addition to the castle, the island is also home to a baroque Augustinian monastery known as the 'Old Castle'. It now houses a gallery.
