Green is the predominant color in this trip, we will travel north of Cluj Napoca with the purpose to discover the natural beauties of Salaj County. We will have five stops: The Garden of Dragons, Jibou Botanical Garden, Lavender Field, Roman Castrum Porolissum and the wooden church from the town of Breb. The tour is suitable for those who want to spend time in nature and to discover new things about the fauna and flora of Romania, it is not a commercial tour and the tourist objectives are less known by the ordinary tourist. The Dragons’ garden is a unique landscape in the whole world. It is the most famous, most impressive sight in Sălaj County. Here we will make a 2 h easy hike.
The protected geological and landscape natural reservation is the home of some peculiar formations. The current appearance of the rocks is due to corrosion (wind, rain, snow etc.), water and vegetation, thus their form is continuously changing and Dragons may change in appearance or height. The uniqueness of the Dragon rocks attracts not only tourists, but researchers as well.
Positioned at the altitude of 272 m, surrounded by fairly high hills, protecting it from cold currents, it enjoys a favorable climate that allows the most diverse experiments. The Botanical Garden’s collections contain over 5.000 species of plants coming from different areas of the world.
The botanical garden and its history began in 1957 when Professor Vasile Fati discovers the potential of the park around the high school (which operates in Wesselenyi Castle) which in his eyes must be capitalized. It is the most recently established botanical garden in the country.
What could be more idyllic than to drink lemonade in a place surrounded by lavender, listening to the trill of birds and the sound of water after a day full of energy and well-being.
A less common wooden church, at least through the interior painting, in which the saints were represented with a smile on their face, is hidden from the eyes of curious in a small town in Salaj. The Church built more then two and a half centuries it has been famous in the past for the singing icons that ware here.
Porolissum Fortress is one of the largest and best preserved Roman Castra and it is located on Pomat Magura hill, near Moigrad Porolissum village, located within Salaj County at 504 meters altitude. The archaeological site is situated 15 kilometers away from the county seat, Zalau. Despite its imposing dimensions, approximately the size of 10 football courts, the castrum has been very well preserved in time.
